London Oddities and Curiosities
London is full of oddities and curiosities, the unusual or amusing or perhaps things that are just overlooked even though you have passed by them many times. During my coach tours and walking tours, many things have caught my eye which I wanted to research and discover more about and in this talk you will find out about many of them. Where is that glistening grasshopper? Where is the pet cemetery in central London? If you need to remount your horse during your visit to London where will you find a mounting block? What is Quasimodo doing in London? These questions and many more will be answered in parts 1, 2 and 3 of this talk
History of the City of London
The City of London is the oldest part of London and is where the Romans settled nearly 2000 years ago. Today it is the financial district being home to both the Bank of England and the London Stock Exchange. Tall modern skyscrapers meet medieval alleyways. In less than an hour we will whizz through 2000 years of history, so hold tight!
A Wander Through St. James's
St. James's became the centre of Royal life in the 17th Century with many fine homes and shops moving to the area to be near the royal residence. Today it is still an affluent area with exclusive shops, grand hotels and restaurants and beautiful green spaces.
Old London Docks and New Docklands
Through the 16th and 17th Century, the River Thames in London became more and more busy with ships and barges importing and exporting goods. There had been docks since Roman times but 1802 saw the building of the West India Dock and more to follow. This is their story, how they came and how then went.
Gardens of the City of London
The City of London is the financial heart of this country with many associated businesses plus publishers, law firms and retail. In between the tall skyscrapers and medieval passageways are many green spaces of varying sizes and styles but you have to look for them.
Story of Southwark
The settlement of Southwark was an integral part of Roman London on the south side of the river. It was a busy industrial area, taking its name from South Works and was also the entertainment centre of London. There are so many aspects of Southwark which we will explore.
London City Safari
Grab your binoculars and safari hat as we take a safari journey through London with all sorts of animals. Not all of them a real, some are stone or bronze but you will be amazed at what we will spot.
